UCSF-Stanford Pediatric Device Consortium

Improving the health, safety, and quality of life of our youngest patients.

Medical devices designed for kids lag five to ten years behind adult technologies. We accelerate high-value, high-impact pediatric device solutions towards commercialization and clinical use.

Who We Are

Our team of clinician-innovators, engineers, scientists, industry experts and entrepreneurs combines the experience of the UCSF PDC, established in 2009, and the world-renowned Stanford Biodesign program.

Meet the team

Our Impact

The UCSF-Stanford PDC leverages the innovation talent of two world-class universities and an entrepreneurial network in the heart of Silicon Valley to equip pediatric device inventors at all stages to translate their ideas into high-value, commercially viable products.

We are part of a national network of centers funded by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to support pediatric device innovators.

Our Services

The UCSF-Stanford PDC supports pediatric device innovators by providing seed grants and mentorship in clinical needs-finding, technical design, product development, intellectual property, business development, regulatory strategy, manufacturing, commercialization, and more.

UCSF and Stanford University are leading biomedical research and education institutions. With our large network of clinical collaborators and proximity to children’s hospitals, we are within arm’s reach of leading clinical experts in all areas of pediatric medicine.

Product Development

Our network of experts assists members with the later stages of the engineering process by walking through the testing and manufacturing stages and identifying potential manufacturers.

Our Regulatory Core provides extensive regulatory, reimbursement, and quality assurance capabilities. We also assist with FDA inquiries and submissions and provide up-to-date advising on FDA guidances.

In parallel to our clinical strengths, the PDC offers science and engineering expertise in-house and through faculty. We provide on-the-ground assistance to pediatric device innovators - from early-stage technical vetting to design, prototyping, and benchtop testing.

Our Commercialization Advisory Board and network provide perspective on all aspects of business development, value landscaping, and commercialization strategy for pediatric device innovators.

Intellectual Property

Navigate whether your invention or technology is protectable and whether you have freedom to operate (FTO). We work with patent attorneys and patent agents to assist in meeting your IP needs.

MARCH 2018

I am truly grateful to the PDC for shepherding me along every step of the way, for always answering my questions in such a timely manner, and encouraging me to forge on.”

- Annie Boekelheide, pediatric nurse practitioner and device innovator
